My assistant Mary and I treated 106 kids at the Orlat Placement Center on a six day trip. We provided cleanings, extractions, and, most importantly, restorative fillings. These kids had never received any dental treatment prior. It was a touching week for everyone involved.
GET TO KNOW DR. JENN
How old were you, and what made you decide you wanted to become a dentist?
I was about 8 years old when I decided I wanted to become a dentist. A family friend was a pediatric dentist and allowed me to watch him work. I was inspired early on to help people with their smiles and was truly fascinated with the art and science of restoring teeth.
What advice would you give to a young person considering a career in Dentistry?
I would encourage them to learn as much as possible about the daily duties of several excellent dentists in the area. It is a very challenging, yet rewarding career. A strong science background is very helpful, but a creative component is just as necessary to do well in dentistry. Working well with people is also essential. A person needs to be passionate about what they do to be successful and researching about everything involved is the only way to decide if it’s the right career.
What is one thing you find most satisfying about being a dentist?
I love changing a patient’s smile or helping someone fearful overcome the initial anxiety to come in and receive much needed treatment. It makes my day when a patient leaves overjoyed under my care.
